Is there an easy method to cover old wall paper paste?

I tried painting over the old paste by adding sand to the paint, but you can still see the dry paste underneath it.

Wall paper paste needs to be removed or the paint won't stick for long. One cup of vinegar to one gallon of hot water. You can try to wash everything down, but since you already painted it may not come off. Only solution is to prime (always) with a stain blocking primer like Zinsser 123 then paint with your color.

I've been a wallpaper hanger for many years. The glue should have been removed first. Then the primer, always primer. So now you should use a good primer then your color. Good luck

If you tried removing it with the methods suggested & it hasn't worked successfully; then use a sander on it. I suggest the use of an orbital sander with adjustable speeds; they are quicker than a palm sander...but always check to make sure you are NOT getting into the drywall itself.

Yes there is, it's called skim coating. Take spackle and a wide knife (spackle knife) and coat the wall with a very thin coat of spackle. Then get a pole sander and sand it down. It doesn't take a thick coat at all but very thin and some time I water the spackle down a little. I also use this method with mold resistant sheetrock because it leaves a rough painted surface.

And I always put a coat or two of primer down on top of the skim.

I don't know what glue some of these home wallpaper jobs used. But since I do decorative paint jobs, I frequently have to sand the excess glue off cause nothing removes it.
