Inexpensive ways to give a kitchen countertop a new look?

Hi. I have heard that some people have used Dixie Belle Paint and a top treatment they make called Gator Hide to redo a kitchen countertop inexpensively and that it actually turns out to be a durable waterproof surface! Would like to know more or to give it a try.
