A tack cloth. It's a cloth specially treated to wipe up after sanding. You can get it at the hardware store, Lowe's, etc. I think they're usually kept with the sandpaper, etc, but ask at the store.
I've used a damp cloth if I plan to paint. I would use a tack cloth if I plan to stain or clear coat. You don't want to see specks of sawdust in your stain or finish.
I used a 50/50 mix of denatured alcohol and water before I painted. Put in spray bottle and used a clean rag (need to keep rag clean). Recommended by painting contractor.
i use just the rubbing alcohol on a clean cloth- keeps the grain of wood from raising.
