How Do I Clean Up the Metal on Old Suitcases?

I want to paint and sell old suitcases but how do I clean up the old metal? I have 4 to paint now with silver color hardware. P.S. The pic below is the overwhelming winner of 4 different designs on my page at www.facebook.com/805and818ChalkBasedPaintInfo. Should I just paint the hardware the color of the suitcase?

Those are gorgeous suitcases! For the metal pieces, you can clean with a microfiber cloth and then use steel wool (with goggles!) to remove rust and restore some shine to the metal pieces. You can stop and use the microfiber cloth every few minutes to see progress. That said - painting over them (like in the above photo) also looks nice!

You might try rubbing the handles with coke a cola

  • These really are pretty just the way they are. Great Job. If you want the metal look on the hardware, What about painting with Silver or gold nail polish and then sealing with a wipe on poly?
