How do you keep feral cats from using your garden as a litter box?

We realized over the winter there are 3 feral cats hanging around our area, and we frequently see them in our fenced backyard. Our garden is a series of boxes. One of the cats is using one of our boxes to do his/her business. How do we put a stop to this - and, if possible, keep them totally away from our yard? Thanks!

Check with your local Veterinarian for someone who traps ferals, neuters, and relocates them.

A pellet gun down the ear canal is quieter. Other than that, try a motion sensor made for a garden hose.

If you have rose bushes that need pruning, lay the thorny stalks in the flowerbox. This worked in my small ground level garden. Eventually they will stop trying and "go" somewhere else..

An easy (and humane) way is simply buy some chicken wire and lay it on top of the soil. If the "look" of it bothers you, just spread a VERY thin layer of soil on top - just enough to cover the wire. Cats always paw the dirt first before going to the bathroom and they won't like the feel of the wire. Another kind solution would be to call a no-kill policy organization in your area who can trap the cats, neuter/spay them and find homes for them.

For some reason the cats here don't scratch they just go. It is very frustrating.

hi Barrbara: In that case, I would say that if you can place a bunch of trimmed rose bushes down - like another reader suggested - it would help. I wish you a speedy solution!

If there are no children around moth balls work wonderfully and even deer don't like them any better than cats, but they are poison so you can't use around little kids.I get them at our local dollar store

Dorothea is right. I had a feral cat using my rose bed as its litter box so I bought some mothballs and sprinkled them in the flower beds. I have seen evidence of any cats since.

Sorry. I meant to say that I HAVEN'T seen evidence of any cats since. Darn auto correct!

If you don't believe that cats despise citrus, just peel an orange near one. In garden beds, peelings must be replaced after a rain. There is a product called Critter Ridder, which works for just about anything, except those pesky squirrels.

I PUT CRUSHED, NOT PULVERIZED, EGG SHELLS AROUND THE PLANTS WHICH THE CATS HATE WALKING ON AND ADDS A LITTLE CALCIUM TO YOUR SOIL.

Get a motion activated sprayer at your local diy store, it will spray them when they come near and kitties don't like to get wet.
