Fig trees are the fastest growing trees out there, and the climate in Atlanta is warm enough for one. Plant a fig tree now, and you will be able to see the fruits of your labor (pun intended) within a couple years.
Keep in mind that fig trees can get really big if they live long enough. I think that the peach trees area good idea. If you live in North Georgia, you could also plant pear or apple.
Almost all fruit trees need to different varieties to cross pollinate in order to bear fruit. check if your neighbors have any fruit trees and then you only need one. Also consider dwarf fruit trees. This means that a 20-30 ft tree might only grow to 10-15 ft tall and wide.
I have a four year old peach tree that produces several small peaches, but not enough sun light ,am going to dig up and sell this fall when goes dormant.but i would suggest a yellow delicious apple for all fruit cross pollination.and your fig if you want peach also you would have all three combinations,as long as you have plenty of sun.
I wouldn't recommend a fig tree mainly because birds have a habit of eating all the fruit, plus they get too big to cover with a net, even if you drastically cut them back. If you do plant one, don't put it close to your house because they do get large & the roots do follow any source of water. If you have a lot of squirrels in your neighborhood, they will eat just about any kind of fruit for its water content, especially during weather like we have been having.
Figs will do well in most parts of Georgia except the mountainous areas.
Personally, I like Plum trees. They have delicious fruits and are attractive trees.
Many prefer apple trees, the trees are strong and apples have many uses. ...»
Cherry trees are also one of my favorites. But you have to race the birds for ripe fruit.
God luck!
Heirloom apple trees are worth trying too.
