What's the best product to remove black mold on tiles in the shower, using the least elbow grease?

Hudson Designs on May 02, 2011Rinse with warm water then apply commercial grade Clorox with a sprayer and let sit 5-10 mins. This should do the job with a few applications. Commercial grade Clorox is available from Lowe's and Homedepot and is stronger than laundry type. Rinse very well Clorox leaves behind a slick film that must be rinsed off. A brush would be helpful if you wanted to add a bit of muscle grease to the mix. If this fails to do the job then regrouting would be next.Helpful Reply

Imagery on May 02, 2011Aubrey, Pretty name, My daughter has the same name... TileX is what I use to remove the black on the tiles. I spray it, and let it sit for about 30 minutes. Rinse, and repeat if necessary. The scrubbing is so very minimal, if any, works on some of the showers I thought I would need to re-grout....This is a great time/effort saving product....If the caulking is black though, you will probably need to pull it out and re-caulk, preferably with an antimicrobial bathroom caulking. The TileX will save your grout though. Good Luck, and open the window or turn on the fan when you spray, it gets a little stinky.Helpful Reply

Dan's of Central Florida, Inc. on May 03, 2011Hi Aubry, Another option for you is Lysol All Purpose Cleaner - Complete Clean with Bleach. We had some black mold growing in a small section of our tub area. My wife just sprayed this stuff on there and walked away (the stuff is meant to air dry and doesn't need to be washed off). The next day both the grout and the caulk were as white as can be. We bought it at Walmart.Helpful Reply

Renewable Renovations and Restorations on May 09, 2011i would think steam would be the best, might have adverse affects (ie grout falling out). I have never tried to steam out mold/mildew from grout but it seems like it would work. Next question? How do you steam it? Maybe an old iron? or a steam mop? let me know if you try it.Helpful Reply

Murals by Monti on May 09, 2011The electric tooth brush idea is very clever! I've gotten good results with bleach, but wear a mask and ventilate the room! You can burn your lungs easily breathing bleach.Helpful Reply

Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on Jul 08, 2011Bleach can be unsafe to use in closed area. Be sure to vent bathroom well if your going that route. Wear eye protection as well. The bleach that says commercial grade is only slightly stronger then stuff you use on your own clothes so do not waste your money on it. Good ole elbow grease with comet and stiff brush works well also. Regardless of the TV commercials that say just spray and wipe. They all need a strong arm behind them to do the job right.Helpful Reply

Rochelle on Jul 13, 2011good ol bleach and comet have never failed. Clorox is my bleach of choice. Their spray clorox I can let sit for a few minutes and barely have to scrub on hard spots - it works well. I don't use it often (bad for ya, and all that jazz) but it's very effective for occasional heavy duty cleaning.Helpful Reply
