I have the same problem, I asked on Hometalk and got great advice: Its extra important to use less detergent if you don't have a dryer. An extra rinse cycle can help keep them softer, and the white vinegar really does work instead of fabric softener Good luck!

I have a washer that has a place to put the softener in the center of the agitator. I fill it with white vinegar and my towels and everything else are just right. I am highly allergic to fabric softner and it isn't good to use it because it accumulates in your clothes and they get grungy after a while. It isn't good for the environment, also. What makes clothes unsoft is too much detergent and not rinsing well. Manufacturers of detergent and other products reccommend the amount so we will buy more and make them more money.

Thank you, The smell of the washing powder and fabric softener give me migraines and so far I have not found an alternative for the fabric softener so just have not been using any .
