Ground cinnamon(spice) works well for ants. You can buy big bottles of the spice, then be liberal with spreading around where the ants travel. Over time, there will be less and less of them. Be sure to add new additions of cinnamon periodically.
The cinnamon burns the tiny hairs on the ants body and clings to their legs and mandibles. They don't like that Good luck. Pesty little critters.
I have always had good results by sprinkling yellow corn meal on the dirt around the nest opening. The ants carry the pieces into the nest and share with all the others. After they ingest it, the corn meal swells up and kills them.
