We have a young son and a dog. And snakes. We need an effective way to repel the snakes to allow a safe place to play.

First I would eliminate any habitat for the snake like wood piles, holes into the house, dense grass or schrubs. Be sure you don't have any food source in your yard they are hunting like mice, rats, fish. Water will also attract snakes in dry climates. If there are lots of vipers in your area, you might want to create a snake fence around your property.

I put out mothballs in outdoor areas and entrances to storage buildings. However, if you see a blacksnake, leave him be as this snake will kill other snakes such as Copperheads. Do some image research and learn to identify the dangerous ones from the safe ones.

Outdoor cats are very good at deterring snakes. Also, chickens. They eat the baby snakes.

  • All great suggestions and Sharon beat me to my recommendation, snake fencing. I just had some installed.

This is not a repellent, but can be used as a trap. I have used it successfully, I even caught 2 snakes together in one "trap"... Place eggs in basket to attract snake, once in they can't figure how to escape. If the snake are not poisono we release them (Away from our home)

Spread Lime around your yard. Snakes won't cross the Lime line.
