How can I keep a mulch edge intact in landscape borders next to grass?

I have always struggled with maintaining my mulch edge-keeping the mulch from getting into the grass and vise versa. After a couple weeks it looks sloppy, especially since I mow next to that edge. I don't want to invest in plastic or metal edging...how can I make a distinct sharp edge that will stay that way throughout the season (and even beyond)?

  • I had the same problem. And I was tired of crawling on my hands and knees picking the mulch out of the grass every week when mowed. I ended up buying used brick and it helped a lot. I decided on the used brick as it was a feature in hardscaping that was existing to the home when I bought it. I also did it over time as my CRV can only hold so many bricks. If you are interested I can take photos for you.

Another house they have a bit of a gap from where the edge of the lawn and the mulch starts. I have no idea how they keep it so tidy. Will pay attention when their gardener person shows up and see if I can learn anything.

In all honestly there is no way,I have a hard time with all assorted edging. You will have to cut out a portion of your area and either use the plastic edging or wood edging.

Yes you need some sort of edging....pipe painted green or brown, or bricks, river rock. railroad ties, cement block or anything to block the movement of your mulch. But first I think you should dig a narrow trench around your flower bed so that you could put in the edging.

I did it with bricks ... 1 flat on the grass side and 1 side up on the mulch side. The mower wheel runs on the flat brick for a nice edge. Wa-la! Looks great!
