Sounds like a fun project! What is it made of? Chalk painting it will give you a way to update the color without too much prep!

Remove the doors and hardware. Mark the doors and cabinets with tape where they go. Lightly sand the doors and cabinets to remove any gloss. Prime with a stain blocking primer like Zinsser 123. Then paint with your color. Seal with at least three coats with a water based polyurethane. Use a small foam roller and foam brush for a smooth finish.

Paint is a good option. If you want to replace the countertop they are not that expensive.

You can replace the vanity about as cheaply as painting/refinishing it. Look on line at Home Depot and Lowes as they have nice pedestal sinks for under $125.00. I have had one installed in the master bath upstairs and my powder rm. on the first floor. It's all a matter of taste.
