Use an old or new door hung on the wall. I do this a lot in clients homes. You can upholster it or paint it.

Padded headboards are easy to make and all you need is fabric of your choice, good staple gun, board cut to size of bed and height you want, twin foam mattress pad (cheap at walmart), and another fabric to place on top of the foam and under the good fabric. I have built many headboards this way. You can add embellishments such as lace for an added feminine touch.

Cut a piece of plyboard to size and cover it with batting and fabric. All kinds of embellishments can be added...from playful to classic fabrics, from brass nails to tufted. Good luck...send photos!

Hobby Lobby has several metal pieces that would work, a friend used an old fireplace mantle piece.
