paint is exterior white; can I mix it with a gallon of forest green to make it pistachio green? Or mix with black to make it gray?
Would that work like my brain thinks??

Yes as long as they are the same type of paint.

since pigment is waterbased it doesn't have to be same type of paint is what was explained to me and your thinking is close to correct just be aware of the different pigments used to get the particular green etc so ensure you mix all you need together in large bucket to ensure same tint (Sherwin Williams employee explanation)

usually water clean up w/ water clean up paint. i tried mixing what turned out to be an oil based with a water based, ick. the oil paint had been mislabeled. turp to the rescue.

the pro painters that i hired to paint after some water damage repair dumped the estimated amount of paint to be used into a 5 gal. bucket and mixed well. apparently, the tint can be off a bit from gallon to gallon.

Take equal amounts out and mix it to see the color.
