Water the paint down. Do one coat and wait to see how it dries. or you could do just a few bricks or sponge on thicker paint on others once you have done the first coat, until you get the effect you are happy with.

I've painted over brick fireplaces before, but this stone is rough. The top of the hearth looks like smooth marble, but the bottom is the same rough stone.
