Boston Ferns hanging baskets
All of the above, plus caladium bulbs. You could plant variegated English Ivy in a pot and train it on a trellis embedded in the pot -- on a balcony, it won't become invasive in the landscape.
Begonias do well in shade as well as the above mentioned plants.
I also have a fairly shaded balcony and just love it! Our southern Ontario Summers are very hot and humid and, many times, too uncomfortable to sit out. I have two faux wicker modern-looking (floor) planters I fill with Boston Ferns. They remind me of those lovely old porches with graceful hanging ferns all around and are such a classic look. However, if you want color, Olivia is correct in suggesting Begonias and shade loving Impatiens will look nice too.
