Old medicine cabinet needs updating

I removed some old contact paper from the back, sides, and bottom of my bathroom recessed metal medicine cabinet. There is rust that won't come off. What can I do to treat this and then either paint or recover? Advise would be lovely.

Hi Julie! Vinegar or lemon juice and some elbow grease should get rid of the rust. Then - paint away! Chalk paint is a simple option 😀
If the vinegar and lemon juice don't work out , try rubbing the rust spots with a pumice stone . Wipe down really well before repainting.
Use a piece of #0000 steel wool with vinegar and dish soap
Suzanne, I ended up using a steel brush and a product called Challenger and then again with LCR. thanks for the advice
