Cracks in floor

I have a bathroom and bedroom that were added to my house and only has a crawl space. my problem is that my floors crack where the floor boards meet from shifting in winter weather. I have linoleum on floor and you can see the cracks in the linoleum. new flooring was put in . what can I do to fix or cover up the cracks. wolid carpet be better?

  • Honestly, to me, it sounds like a construction issue. I would call a qualified licensed contrator to take a look at it before trying to cover it up.

    Do you mean the seams expand and contract? Was the crawl space insulated? Is there a moisture problem in the crawl space? You need to find and solve the cause first.

    Consult a building engineer to examine and identify the situation that causes this problem. It could be a simple fix, or a major problem. Lack of insulation and ventilation,(Fix: add more of each) Are you needing more support between floor joists and ground,(Fix: install additional support columns). Are floor joists themselves sized correctly to carry the load, (Fix: sister thicker joists to existing ones to strengthen the floor)... If the worst cracking is where the new addition meets the original exterior wall, have the bolts examined that connect the ledger board to the house. They might not be long enough or not enough of them, and begin pulling away from the rim joists they are attached to. (Fix: add more of the right size from the crawl space side of addition).
