    Most types of flooring require an underlayment. The sales associate where you bought the flooring can advise you about what you need for your specific materials.

    carpet needs padding. Laminate needs underlayment. Tile needs grout.

    Depends on what you are trying to do. Most floors need a protective layer underneath and floating floors most of the time have them built into the flooring.
