Looking for something economical to cover the studs in a finished basement. Suspended ceiling is missing tiles and just a mess.

Because many basements have low ceilings I would remove all of the old drop down ceiling and clean the studs and paint them with a light color high gloss paint. Using white paint will make the ceiling feel higher.

I've seen people do wood plank ceiling with stained and top coated scrap wood, and also with bead board.

If the drop ceiling hardware is still in good shape you can make new panels from cardboard covered with wallpaper/contact paper, starched fabric; or buy new ones from lowes. You could also just spray paint the old panels for a new look.

We had no stop down ceiling. Just the pipes and floorboards. What we did with ours is paint it a very dark industrial green...almost hard to tell it's not black. We added about 29 can lightS. We finished the basement but the dark green ceiling just seems to fade into the background, which is what slot of retail stores and restaurants seem to be doing. Very. It's effective. And it looks great!
