How to improve my garden soil?

Created a large box garden . Hubby ordered "dirt" to be dumped in garden box. It might as well been loose asphalt. Ive tried mixing, fertilizing and more. What else can I do?

    Start making your own compost, add manure of some kind: chicken, goat or Alpaca from my neighborhood...

    Use all you scraps like shells from vegetable and fruits, mix with regular soil and let sit from spring until autumn, then use. You can add egg shells which will help compost the mixture. also cuts from lawn and twigs will help loosen it.

    Don't ever mix with boiled meat or raw meat, use greens only, let worms take over the work to get air in all. It shouldn't smell at all

    Peat moss is you best bet along with some potting soil. Peat moss helps to loosen the soil. till the rows were you want to plant not were you want to walk then add peat moss, it sounds like you will need a lot of peat moss to loosen your soil
