How about a bookshelf lining the wall and facing the couch towards the bookcase and fireplace like this example?

I have some large Chinese fish bowls on carved stands next to my fireplace. Much to the horror of a couple friends, I put kindling in one. You can float your sofa and coffee table in front of the fireplace, put a sofa table behind the sofa and put 2 lamps on it..

I have a corner fireplace and trouble with furniture placement....
