Security measure's taken for a home?

I'm looking to increase security on our home. I've gotten an electrician to hard wire motion detector lights on the gable over our garage, and we do have an alarm system. Aside from lights on timers, does anyone have any other good ideas? Thank you!

We have an informal neighborhood watch, which helps with this sort of thing as well.

Ask your local police department to patrol your area. We had a problem in our other subdivision - we set up a neighborhood watch through the police department and they patrolled the area for us. Ps we were next to the subdivision pool so the kids loved to come there and party after hours. (cured that! :-)

Put up some security Doors,You would not believe how much more secure you will feel,I have some.

My major suggestion is to go on line and google "Strike Master" and watch the video. This can be ordered through Home Depot and cost about $90...easily installed. We have them on all our outside doors. Replace any glass doors with metal doors. Many decorative wooden doors have beveled edges to down to less than 1/4" thick...not gonna stop anyone from kicking it in. My neighborhood won an award because we have (1) a watch program (2) a Block Parent program (3) and a newsletter. Our neighbors watch out for each other too! We do not have a lot of fancy stuff to steal, but we just want protection while we are sleeping. Oh yes, the best alarm is a dog! We have a black lab...America's favorite dog for 22 years...I KNOW WHY! They are so smart and a pain in the....well, we still love her dearly!

Thanks Jeanette! Our very modest neighborhood has changed dramatically since the govt. permitted HUNDREDs of low income apt.'s to be built, right in front of our neighborhood. So, the petty theft comes from that. How wonderful for you that your neighborhood sounds so proactive. Getting people here, to organize a neighborhood watch?? huh uh...not gonna happen. oyyyy...and yes, I so agree about the dogs! We have two small ones, a mini schnauzer who doesnt care about anything but -the 13 pound chihuahua...ohhh,- SO FIERCE :) Strike Master...i'll google it now. Thanks much!

We planted Thorn Bushes & Holly under our windows. The thorns deter anyone from wanting to try to get in. A friend installed a surveillance system after her home was broken in to. After a year, there have been no more problems. The best advice is to ask your local police dept. to give you some tips.

@Donna McFarland - Maybe you should consider investing in a wireless home security system. This way, you do not have to deal with the process of hard wiring your house and you do not run the risk of burglars cutting into those hard wires. You may also want to look into the benefits of having a video surveillance system. With security cameras, you can keep an eye on your home when you are not there. I recently added security cameras outside of my home. I can remotely view My home when I'm away. Because my front door is located in a deep entryway , I can now view who is at my front door before opening. In reviewing the recording of my front yard, I am now more familiar with who normally walks or is part of the neighborhood. Worth every penny I invested in this security camera system .

I forgot to add that they have very good technical support. They will walk you through the set up for remote viewing and will answer all your questions. Installation is fairly easy. However, I had to hire someone because I was scared to walk inside my attic since it has no floors boards. FYI $160 for installation of four cameras.
