What can I do with my drab wood kitchen cupboards

my wood cupboards are just a plain flat almost like a plywood type of wood.. I am looking for ways to spruce up my kitchen

Chalk paint them! No real prep, color of your choice, and voila!!
Depending on your taste and the balance of the kitchen you can put a nice stain on them.Again before making any decisions it is best to take lighting into consideration.
You can also put some kind of framing on the doors to give them a little oomph along with hardware that you like.
Agree with the framing idea, then paint them all a nice bright white or your choice. Even without the framing the color will really change the look of the kitchen. You can also remove some of the doors, or replace with glass doors for an entirely new look.
