Chalk paint it! There won't be any prep! Personally, I love white, but that's a matter of taste. I think this piece has a lot of potential!
I'd consider a roll-up shade or blinds instead of a door.......but I'm a cheapskate....lol!
Yes to the chalk paint suggestion ( try a final coat with a light varnish so there is no chipping or scratches) and perhaps add another shelf and insert fabric bins ( Target, Walmart etc) as cute and neat storage cubbies.
To gain more work surface, how about mounting the door with hinges at the bottom so it serves as a drop-down tabletop? Screw - in legs at the opposite end will give support and a magnetic catch at the top keeps it closed when not in use. (When not in use, remove the legs and clip with magnets to the sides or back of unit). Cover the inside surface or door/table with a durable paint or laminate you are comfortable working on. Keep inside a light color - it makes items easier to see.
Exterior surfaces: 1). Chalk paint is a good choice if you want to draw up ideas that won't be hidden from view when working at the unit. 2). If you want a high impact statement piece, how about unicorn spit gel stain. There are examples of that technique here on Hometalk . 3). Another popular treatment would be pallet wood glued and nailed like a second skin to the outside. Each board can be painted or stained individually or as one whole piece. 4). Contact paper is very affordable and has a lot of choices. 5). Don't forget that the drawer pulls can be updated too.
You can also mount a power bar on the inside of the unit and run the plug out the back toward nearest outlet. Convenient for lighting and craft tools that aren't battery powered.
Stock up on organizers that suit your needs, load 'em up and have fun crafting.
I love the idea of the white chalk paint to give it some lightness and it would enable to you see your things better. Also, if you have done the paint inside as well as outside, think about not having doors on it... you could show off the lovely things inside too. I think it would look really pretty!
