Is it better to let cucumbers grow on the ground or on a trellis?

  • I prefer a trellis, easier for me to keep things tidy, easier to see the fruit and easier to harvest.

    yes to the trellis. it will keep the cukes cleaner and away from some bugs.

    Trellis training is best for growing cucumbers.

    Trellis....or use wire tomato baskets. One year our English cucumbers grew up into a nearby crepe myrtle tree. Had to get the step ladder out to get into the crepe myrtle to harvest those hanging cucumbers. Best crop of cucumbers e ever had!!!

    Trellis! Lying on the ground the cukes are susceptible to insects and rotting.

    I agree! I have done it both ways. I let mine have their way on the chain link fence on the west side of my garden. I just tell my neighbor if she sees a ripe cucumber on her side to help herself. My squash I let head for the chain link at the south end of the garden and it goes up that fence and get perfect winter squash hanging from the fence. I had one that was about six inches across that had no problem hanging because the vines are sturdy.
