leak from upstairs condo created a bubbling and long water discoloured crack. No longer leaks. Have not 'opened' up ceiling for the fix. May need to cutout the ceiling drywall around the bubble? Any suggestions on proceeding - would like to avoid complete ceiling repair or hauling up full drywall sheets ....

You got this!!! Use a sturdy ladder to gain access to the ceiling. Scrape off all the water damaged popcorn material until it is all removed and the stained ceiling is visible. Vacuum or dust the ceiling to remove any left over dust. Use a paint brush and prime the water damagedceiling with a product called KILZ ceiling- goood luck!!!

You can buy popcorn ceiling patch in a spray can. However if you had enough moisture to create a bubble, then the outer surface of the drywall will have to removed, as I am sure it is loose. You will need to patch over the removed area with patching plaster or drywall mud, stain block prime, and them apply your texture. At best, it won't look great, but most ceiling patches don't.
