How do I even out worn stair treads?

I have removed carpeting prior to refinishing my stairs. The edge of the treads is worn and uneven. Any ideas?

Sounds like you should give it a good sanding

If sanding removes too much material you can order replacement treads from Home Depot. Reasonably priced too.

Are the treads oak or something else? If they are oak, the wear you speak of could be considered patina which is very desirable. A clean up, what that consists of depends on a lot of factors, and some polyurethane will be all you need. If they are plywood or something else I would agree about looking into replacement treads. There are several ways stairs can be built so the practicality of various solutions cannot be assessed by those of us who cannot see the stairs.
