After planting and as time goes by, the new growth gets spindly and very overcrowded.

And since the rhubarb plant has a huge greedy root system, there is a lot of competition.

It’s time for it to be divided.

This is the key, the secret of its success.

By division, every four to five years, best if done in the fall when the plant is dormant – between mid-fall and early spring.

It can also be divided in spring very easily, too, best if done before new growth starts.

Dig the plant, using a sharp knife, cut cleanly between the buds, dividing the main rootstock/divisions or “crown” of an established plant into separate pieces or “sets.”

You can determine each new plant by its “crown” of buds.

I was told mine needed iron. Pound a couple of old rusty railroad spikes in the ground near your roots. And you can find rusty spikes by most railroad tracks...I don't know if they need iron but mine is flourishing now.
