Gardening

I bought an unidentified "melon" plant last year from a garden center and it was in a potted raised garden I was

experimenting with and simply TOOK OFF! It was crawling out of the pot and moving across the yard like squash! It was putting out the most beautiful huge yellow blooms and I had 3 melons starting to grow when I thought I was smarter than Mother Nature Herself and decided they needed a "Boost" I sprayed some misted Miracle Grow for flowering plants and I thought that they would get HUGE...They shriveled up and DIED! I managed to salvage the melons and while not ripened fully, had a decidedly sweet exotic flavor! I salvaged the seeds and this year, I came up with this bright idea. I made this trellis like runner from spare wood in my garage and some nylon string. I'm going to let them come out of the pot again and NO EXTRA JUICE this time. There used to be an above ground pool in the area I picked and aftyer good rains, it holds the water for a couple of days so I know the mystery melon will have plenty of moisture and holding it's little blooms in the air, in theory, it should lay me down some pretty melons for me to identify! The center bar is a piece of half inch water pipe with gutter spikes holding the string like a guitar in case they get heavy and droop...I can raise the center PVC to accomodate the streched string! I'll keep everyone posted and maybe someone knows what exactly they are! Best to me! JL

You're a creative and crafty guy, JL. Keep the pics coming. The Miracle Grow note was interesting. More like Miracle Kill.

Those are going to be the most pampered melons on the planet! We look forward to watching their progress and expect samples via FedEx!

I joked with my wife about setting up our white patio furniture like bleachers and have spectators pay to come in and bet on their favorite runner! With the "Platinum package" of $25 they get a key to the locked gate so they can come anytime and "root" for their favorite! I'll be looking for some summer help to run the concession stand if it pans out, someone's gonna want a hot dog and soda if they sit that long for sure!!! >Chuckle< ...»

Thanks for y'alls interest, I'll keep a pix dialogue going and to the winner goes the un-spoiled slice!

According to the "Co-Intellagence Institute" ...Dialogue can at times be truly magical, dissolving the boundaries between us and the world and opening up wellsprings of realization and resonant power. C'mon Lucky #3!!!

    JL,

Very clever! Hopefully the plants will return the favor for all your hard work. I'm flying in to Richmond July 1. I'll check it out from the air. I lived by the radio station up on Church Hill when I was a kid. I heard it is not the same place it used to be....? Good luck with all your projects!

We just moved back home here from Tampa and You wouldn't recognize the Church Hill area...lots of rehabs. Now it's getting safe to drive through at night! Do you have a ride from the airport? I'm off of Forest Hill Ave between the Powhite and Chippenham, maybe I can help.

Have a safe trip, I sure miss my fresh Key Limes...we had a tree just outside our door and wifey makes the most fabulous pies (with Splenda!!)

    JL,

To funny...I just sent my Mother a Splenda cookbook for Mother's Day!!...Lived in the closest house to the radio station. It was 3 times as long as it was high. Very old and neat place. All set in Richmond. We are headed to my hometown Fredericksburg for a couple of days then over to the Chesapeake for some blue crabs and family. I do appreciate the nice gesture.

Swell, We just got into this place (our dream home!) a month ago but were in Fredericksburg for the past year on a couple acre spread out in the country behind the Super Wal-Mart up rte 17 a few miles past the interstate. Fairview Beach and Colonial Beach have some excellent seafood...Wilkersons' "Happy Clam" is the place in Colonial B...Best to you and have a safe memorable trip

Very clever way to keep the vines off the ground. I'll bet it looks good when it fills in too.

JL, I think you inspired me. I went to my local university's plant sale (Colorado State used to be Colorado A&M, as in Agriculture and Medicine, and still has a big plant science school. The plant science kids grew plants and sold them for cheap for a school fundraiser). Anyhow, they had "Mystery Peppers" and I bought one. I guess we'll be trading photos later in the season.

What was the mystery melon? Did you ever find out? It looks like a flood in the pictures. This is a great idea. I like your craftsmanship. Great work!

I had to come up with another plan...the area was an indentation where a pool had been. I got these fence pieces from my friend in who's yard My Wife and I were married in...just around the corner from our current place but about 20 years ago! He was taking it down so I cut the sections up and have some HUGE Punkin's growing from last year's Halloween Jax-o-lantern! I'll get some pix soon! Thanks and I never have found out what they were, but somehow I have one more growing in a hanging ...»
planter that slipped in from somewhere. The seeds were immature and didn't stand a chance but the new little fellow is holding his own in a hanger!

I have to admit, with "Lik-ked Nalz" and deck screws, it get's easier & easier to make that silk purse from that ol' sow's ear!

Raining intermittantly here today after a no-winded wet wollop last night! Overnight the lawn's from tan to green...I started to comment that it was like living in the Kalahari but from what I've heard, they are in a dangerous drought now with record low water levels! Same as Amazon...I may ...»

not blame the Hummer drivers but I truly see signs of global warming, especially in the reefs...Add the world to your prayers folks, and May God Continue To Bless The USA!

    • Rotisseri chicken plastics for seed germination and sproutin'
    • squash on the left looks similar to the mystery melon off-shoot! Hmmmmm?
