Extra Storage in a Small Kitchen: DIY Shelf Above the Stove

Sometimes it's the small things that make a huge difference, especially in a tiny kitchen. To make my tiny NYC studio apartment more functional, I added a simple DIY shelf above the stove to give me extra space for spices and cooking utensils. Then I removed 2 of the electrical elements on the stove and covered the holes with glass cutting boards to give me extra counter space. Just those 2 small changes to my small kitchen made cooking a much more enjoyable experience! The shelf is really easy to build with inexpensive pine boards, a drill and clamps - click on the link for the step-by-step instructions.

These corner clamps make building a simple box really easy - it's like having an extra set of hands! I share the rest of the instructions on my website. Link below!

It's also a great project to add more counter space vertically - in this example, I also added a banana stand for fun!

You can see how I added the banana stand in this video.
