You can actually paint the rug! This woman did it via stencil, but it's a good tutorial for rug painting in general!
How to Stencil & Paint Carpet
You can simply paint it with the proper fabric paint.
If you place a substantial coffee table, pool table, or other large, dark piece of furniture on top of the rug, that will become the focal piece instead of the rug. And because it costs nothing, flip the rug over to see if the back side can be used as the top side, if the colors suit your taste better.
