Help me replace my carpets with "_____"???

Help! I live in the top unit of a triplex. I'd like to switch out my out dated carpet to anything but . . but hear that if I go wood, laminate, or tile, it will make every footstep of mine very loud to the unit below. I'm told each unit is separated by a concrete slab. Is carpet the best for avoiding noise to those below, or is there an alternative? I so want to get rid of my carpets!

Maybe if you rent and not own, just put down an additional pad on top of current carpet then put down a series of rugs or carpet that you prefer. I have seen many lovely large area rugs on sale.

    Hi Barb,

I would try vinyl. there are so many different ones out there. If i has a chance i would do all the floors in my house. Its easy to clean and cheaper in the long run.

    Hope that helps.

Since you have a concrete slab on the floor between you and the tenant below this alone should serve as a sound deterrent and then install a quality laminate with an area rug on top, you should be fine.

Luxury Vinyl Plank, which have two methods of installation/ Glue Down or Floating. If you are renting, you might need to clear with your landlord. Very versatile, easy to clean, can use a steam mop (which you can do with hardwood or laminates). Very popular here in our Florida Floorcovering Showroom due to the humid climate we have! You can add areas rugs for sound buffering if needed (and warmth).

    Good Luck!!!

Thanks! I will check into this. I had not heard of vinyl planking. I own the triplex, and would love to switch out the wall to wall carpet but since each unit has one above it, want to manage sound control too. Again, thanks for your kind reply!

Floating floors can have a double layer of the plastic base that goes down first. then the throw rugs and then it comes up when you move.

    Specific Brands:

Armstrong's Luxe Plank with Ridgecore, Armstrong's Vivero Plank with Integrilock (Armstrong.com), All styles of Coretec Vinyl Plank (USFloorsllc.com)

and Shaw's Floorte Vinyl Plank (Shawfloors.com) just to name a few. Some can be pricey, but the longevity makes up the difference in price.

    Good Luck!!!!

If there is concrete between the floors, noise should not be a problem. If you want wood or laminate, you can have a pad put underneath, both for noise and for comfort.
