What are some tricks for painting over glossy paint?

I have some glossy paint - very dark red walls. I want to use a light color but don't want red color bleeding through or paint chipping because of the glossy finish of the red.

  • You need a really good primer and most likely 2 coats before applying your desired lighter color. Let each coat dry well before applying the next. Talk to the guys and gals at your paint store, they will be able to help you the best. Take photos with you if possible. It can be done, it just will take a little bit of time and elbow grease!

I agree with Naomie! A good stian blocking primer like BIN or Zinsser 123.

lightly sand off the glossy surface it repels new coatings, (pearl, semi- gloss and gloss are used on trim, doors and base boards for their stain repealing qualities and wash ability) you just run the sand paper over the surface it will pull it right off no scrubbing action your not trying to get to the paper! if you have the brush on your vacuum use that after to get your dust off, a quick wipe down. Then bulls eye 1-2-3. Deep and bright colours are always difficult to cover always prime them it will safe you money and work putting them up and covering them. Use a 180-220 grit paper

Reds & purples [red based] are the hardest colors to cover; many people who have tried covering, ended up with 'pink' walls. My suggestion is to panel the wall, if you don't want to continually paint it. You can paint it at a later date if you like.
