What's the Safest way to get rid of a hornet's nest in the ground?

We have a pile of branches that grass and weeds grew up in before we were able to get it hauled off. When we did start to haul it off, we found that hornets had build a nest under it. I am allergic to insect stings.

We had the same problem. First off don't you do it! Secondly wait until dusk when they are not so active and then have somebody pour gasoline on the nest and run like heck
Boiling water! First, wait until dusk, then place a water hose down (or as close as possible to) the hole. (Be alert and do this quickly!) From a distance, using a funnel, pour the boiling water down the the water hose. I use two kettles full. Whether we see more hornets or not, we repeat the boiling water application a couple of days later. We've done this three or four times since we've lived here, and it has always worked without a sting! Please be aware gas is dangerous and is not good for the environment...It could even leach into the ground water. Be safe!
I had one and neither of the county agencies wanted to help me. (My tax dollars at work?) I would have had to call a private exterminator for big bucks. Plus I have a ton of pets - so waiting wasn't an option. I watched utube videos. I saged them first then did the boiling water trick followed with a good dose of white vinegar. I was willing to sacrafice growing in the area for the pets. I did wear swimming goggles to be safe, didn't really need them though. Worked like a charm.
Wait till dark, pour gasoline on and around the nest ,what the gasoline won't kill ,the fumes will be sure to pour enough gasoline on it that it drowns them . Boiling water only kills a few, and they will renest!
Cover the hole with screening first do they can't fly at you. We had one in a brick enclosure used to store firewood. Daddy waited till dark and covered the opening with screen, then set it on fire.
i like the covering with screen FIRST... then pour in the boiling water.
I got a couple cans of commerical hornet killer, waited till it was almost dark and then blasted away until that can was empty. Ran back inside like crazy as I am allergic to the venom. Went back and did again in a couple days as a few were still flying around.
Cover with screen great idea...then blast with Raid wasp/hornet spray. I got wasps in house siding every year until Raid...
