Paint or Wallpaper? Yes, this project is painted!

There are many advantages to utilizing paint instead of wallpaper:

1) You choose the perfect color(s) for your project. There is no need to spend hours looking through wallpaper books

2) You choose the exact design to fit the scale and style of your space. The options that are now available with paint are infinite.

3) Walls are rarely straight. Floors and ceilings are rarely level. Using paint allows you to disguise these imperfections by adjusting the patterns as you go. Designs can be placed so they are VISUALLY correct rather than MATHEMATICALLY correct.

4) Measuring for wallpaper can be tricky. This is especially true if the walls are curved, angled or have a lot of fixtures to consider. Mistakes are costly. Any unopened packages can be returned but are usually subject to a restocking fee. If you are short, you run the risk of the additional rolls not being a perfect match.

5) Since wallpaper comes in double rolls, you must make sure to order plenty. I hate to see the excess paper go to waste. I would rather see a leftover quart of paint. Chances are, it can be used for another project in that space. ...»

6) Paint can be repaired easily with a paint brush.

7) If you have ever stripped wallpaper you understand the cost and mess that is involved with removing. A painted wall requires only primer and paint when you are ready for a change.

If you are looking to add spice to a room, you may want to explore the options that are now available with paint.

That is just beautiful!! Does the time involved still out weigh the cost of wallpaper?

Awesome explanation on Wallpaper vs Paint, you nailed it, i am now convinced. How does it compare cost wise?

Great questions. The most elusive variable is the cost of wallpaper. I have seen some that are easily up to $200/yard. Likewise, the cost of a faux finish or decorative painting is dependent upon how intricate and labor intensive the project will be.

When doing a price comparison of wallpaper you must consider the following that includes the full cycle for figuring the "cost of ownership": ...»

    1) Time involved in the selection process . . . either YOUR time and gas or the investment of a designer's time. (Our time: 20 minutes to specify the colors and design).

    2) Wall preparation and Installation . . . hanging a high end wallpaper is not a DIY project. You have too much invested in the product to risk a problem.

    3) Repairs . . . easy IF you started with good quality paint and you have stored the leftovers properly. A few of the attributes of "quality" paint include UV protectants to prevent fading and ability to level so you will not see brushstrokes.

(BTW, same goes for any wall paint.)

    4) Not having to strip wallpaper when you want a change. . . PRICELESS!!!!!!!

So, the short answer is . . .This project was inspired by a magazine photo. We did our best to replicate the design of the wallpaper. After some research and mathematics, the cost to complete this wall was about 40% less than it would have been to install the specified wallpaper. (Even less if you decide to DIY!)

PS. This large pattern would never have worked with wallpaper. The walls were extremely crooked and the floor was uneven. Nothing would have matched up and it would have drawn attention to the imperfections.

In regards to buying and selling a property--getting it staged...I am a big advocate for NO wallpaper--it becomes very "personal" taste in terms of pattern choice. When selling a home, neutral is better and wallpaper is a big turn off for buyers. They see it as work and that means spending $$$.

This is a wonderful, cost effective solution that looks high quality, elegant, trendy but does not box you in when it comes to changing it. ...»

Why paper????...Paint last for centuries....Just ask the Cavemen who painted those walls in Europe.....preserve history and save a tree.....paper never last.

I love this! Was it a stencil? Where would a DIYer find a stencil this size? I've seen smaller ones at Arts and Crafts stores but nothing this size.

You can google "stencils" and a lot of options will come up. Some of the sites even offer online classes and helpful hints.

Paint Avenger, I have to respectfully disagree about wallpaper. There actually seems to be a renaissance going on, with all kinds of small companies springing up making interesting artisinal papers, some old-fashioned, some wildly contemporary. You may not find them in a home improvement store, but they're out there. (And which doesn't mean that what Wallstreat did here isn't absolutely beautiful, because it is.)

Douglas' You are up to date with interior design. There are so many materials and interesting textures and patterns being introduced to the market.Faux finishing is quickly going out of style. A good quality stencil finish how ever will always have it's place. The stair way looks really awsome. The issue people make about wallpaper is often the difficulty in removing it. Paint A, has a great point. Years ago a painter would automaticlly learn the art of installing wallpaper. Because wallpaper has been out of fashion for the past several years there is a shortage of technicians. As the wallpaper industry returns it is how ever quite venerable. A bad install will make the home owner rethink paint or paper for there next project. If it's in the budget, have it professionally installed. It's interesting reading so many of the comments refering to the stencil as ...»

Tim, I am often asked by designers to mimic a sample of wallpaper. With the new artistic painting mediums that are available, I have yet to find one that cannot be duplicated. The advantage is that you can specify the exact colors and patterns that you want or even make up your own.

You are correct that removing wallpaper has been one of the main issues that people shy away from. They also dislike the appearance of seams and the difficulty to repair in the event of damage. ...»

This is why an artistic finish is often the favored solution. In my years of doing this, less than 25% of my clients have walls that were properly prepared to begin with. As a result, that will sour them on ever using wallpaper again. . . especially when they see what can be done with paint options.

With your level of skills, your talents will always be in demand. What you do is a true art. Not all contractors that do faux finishing are on that same playing field.Doing repairs on paper can be a problem . Seams showing can be a problem. Again it has to do with the contractor doing the work.

Thank you Tim. The amateur finishers have given the concept of "faux finishing" a bad reputation.
