Mulch or stones in landscaping?

We have pulled out really old shrubs and replaced them with several smaller, new ones. My dilema? do we fill in with plants, mulch or stones for the least hassles and upkeep?

mulch by far - it will break down and feed your soil. rocks tend to capture wind blown dirt and weeds. it's also much harder to pull the weeds out of the rocks.

i would plant annual flowers around the shrubs, when the shrubs are mature, then do perennials.

First use a heavy landscape fabric before applying mulch. One you are done and you see fit flowers can always be added if not in the ground in containers.

I would put the stones on the bottom for drainage, then mulch on top of that. . . then put some brown paper on top of the mulch, then place good black potting soil, for this will eliminate weeds from growing up and taking over. I hope this helps you. Best wishes, J.

most people remove the stones after a few years as they can be a pain to keep clean and weed free.. If you choose mulch do not use black mulch it is died black and usually made of chopped up pallets and etc and has no chemical benefits to breaking down as in nutrients in most of the times it will actually leach minerals and nutrients from the ground. Sassafras bark is said to be the best mulch you can use it's expensive but also works as a compost
