I used a tile saw with a diamond blade, cut the bottom off of the bottles, did not lose any bottles. Some of the bottles had heavier bottoms the saw cut right through them. We even cut notches into the glass so we could pass wire into the bottles without making them sit lopsided.

Put a masking tape ring around the base of the bottle, then tech the glass with a diamond glass cutter , PROTECT THE REST OF THE BOTTLE BY WRAPPING ALL BUT THE BASE WITH COMPLETE WRAPPINGS OF SEVERAL (3 - 4) LAYERS OF MASKING TAPE. Heat the base with a soldering torch for a minute or two/apply ice to the base for a minute or two/ WEARING PROTECTIVE GOGGLES & LEATHER WORK GLOVES . The glass will expand temporary, where it was heated/ followed by sudden cooling on the diamond - etched surface---> resulting in sudden shrinking. The extreme temperature shift should cause the glass to break along the etched line in the bottle. Sometimes, with a bit of guidance by tapping the sides of the bottle with the EDGE of a 2x4, AT THE ETCH LINE will produce the desired fracture . BE CAREFUL / BE CAREFUL / HAVE FUN!!

Tie a string around the bottle and then soak it with lighter fluid, light it , when it goes out , put it in cold water , it should crack at the line , may have to tap it carefully , but should break off pretty clean.
