Hi, I am thinking of digging up these two plants-climbing bittersweet vines and holly. Not sure what to put there if anything that does not require upkeep. Any thoughts/ideas would be appreciated.

For low maintenance plant a variety of creeping sedum

Put a tree ring around it and then plant a groundcover in the ring. Or fill the ring with a contrasting mulch - like acorns or sandstone chips

Plant Tulip bulbs in the Fall for Spring color, then you could always put annuals there for your summer color. Annuals are nice because you can change it every year for different color. Or you could always plant low growing bushes or short ornamental grasses that only need to be cut short every spring.

Annuals......maybe some long lasting marigolds that brighten things up and are HARD to kill.......

If you're looking for some sort of a shrub try planting some yuccas. I think it would fill the space around the lamp post quite nicely and they need no care.

How about planting a pretty clematis? You could wrap a piece of chicken wire around the pole to give it a starting place.

Embrace the lamp post and forget trying to hide it with vines. A boxwood hedge around the base (square like the post) and keep it properly pruned.

How about a clematis? it gives lovely flowers during spring or try asters that come in stores they are perenials and quite hardy and very low maintenance - mine gives flower every fall and its quite a site to see under my post..
