Is it laminated wood furniture? sounds like it may be. I am not sure, but I would try google it, or search a furniture blog

Is it veneer? Did water get on it?

It looks like veneer to me. Research repairing veneer, I think you can iron it to reactivate the glue.

It is veneer and it's lifting at a seam where the sheets of veneer were joined during manufacturing. This can be caused by a number of things. Keep in mind the nature of wood, it shrinks and swells depending on the environment (moisture, warmth, a/c, winter heat) that surrounds it. Somehow the seams have been affected by that. Anything you do to repair it ( do the entire surface) will probably require sanding, re-staining and finishing off with a good sealer. Ironing might be a temporary fix. Hope you're able to fix it soon. My experience is that the problem will only get worse. P.S. If it is an inexpensive piece of furniture, be sure that there's no paper involved with the top. In other words, the wood grain 'look' is just a picture of wood grain glued to fiber board. If that's the case, don't sand!!
