How can I get rid of carpenter bees?

I've had carpenter bees living in and eating away at my barn every summer. The bees tend to hang out right above the doorway to the barn and dive bomb anyone who gets close! Is there anyone who has found an affordable, long-term solution that won't be poisonous to humans or pets?

Spray boric acid in the holes of the carpenter bees, in order to kill their larvae before they hatch (10). Spray aerosol carburetor cleaner on the bees or on their burrows (11, 12). It is certainly not a gentle product to be used for the extermination of carpenter bee, but it is the most effective remedy

A bug man who was treating my house for termites suggested using any kind of bug spray you have (spray inside the hole really good) and then fill in the holes with putty. Because we had it in the house, in an applicator gun, we used Silicon caulking that we used around windows. We had them in the eves of our shed. They have stopped coming for several years now. Good luck.

They will usually not bore into painted surfaces.
