I have repaired mine a couple of ways. One was just plain sparkle and patch the holes. I mounted the rod out a tad more to not be in the same location. Two was with small wood stops that I cut to be long and wide enough to cover the holes and be used for the new mounting surface. With that idea we ended up on one window trimming all the way around like a picture frame. Last is moly screws in the old holes if not to damaged.

Dry wall putty in the hole , sand when dry and paint over the spot to match the walls . When rehanging the curtain, move over aabout 3/4 to an inch and use a dry wall anchor that can hold the weight . I had no idea there was such a wide variety until I had to hang heavy mirror where there was no stud. Talk to the people at Lowe's, Home Depot , wherever you shop for your hardware needs.
