Home Depot and Lowes both carry the simple spray on popcorn ceiling supplies, and is fairly easy. It is usually in the paint department, or just ask for help.
I'm not talking about the really big popcorn with built in,glitter, but we have popcorn on all our ceilings and love it. It gives depth and interest, it doesn't look like a white flat, box. And as you know it's all about retro now!!!!!!!!!!!!

there is a "paint" roller specifically designed for this affect. It is plastic and porous. We successfully used it in our family room.
