It really depends on your personal preference and style. If you like color then do it! I am a color person but I don't want to have to repaint every time I change my curtains or bedding so I opted for more neutral colors and then pulled color into the room with fabric and decorative items. There are great muted hues out there in all different colors so you can add some color on the walls without making that your focal point. When i moved into my house a year ago the walls were dark browns and rust colors. It made the rooms feel closed in and small. I repainted with lighter colors, beige and grey-green. Then brought colorful furniture in. The look is beachy and light. If you love color on walks though, then go for it. Unless you're planning on selling anytime soon, make it your own! It's your home. You want to love being there.
Paint colors are truly personal taste. I will tell you from experience what ever you decide you think you like buy samples and test the color in you home based on lighting.
You can always paint over the current color with a white or neutral color first, then try a statement wall color on just one wall to see if you like the new color. You can always paint one wall easily, and the neutral on the others can be your primer for any color.
Paint colors should be a personal choice and work with your furnishings and flooring. I would suggest buying sample cans of different colors and paint a small area on each wall in the room so that you can see what it looks like in different lighting. You could always bring a cloth swatch or a pillow with you to the paint store to find the colors you like best. And I'd like to suggest a satin finish (for cleaning purposes). Best of luck.
I agree that it should be your personal choice. I would go with a creamy yellow, very light. About anything goes with that color. You can change your accessories very often with that color.
