Tip:An Easy fix for lighting up outside lanterns without using candles

A tip for those who buy open lanterns to hang on shepherd's hooks in their yard. We couldn't put candles in them because of our sprinkler system and oregon rain would fill bottom of lanterns and ruin battery operated candles. So we bought cheap solar yard lights, took off the stakes, propped them up in the lanterns using empty water bottles. Bottom of solarlight goes in top of water bottle, then we cut the bottoms off to the appropriate height of lantern so only the top of the solar light was approx 1" to 2" from top of lantern. Voila- during day they look like decorative lanterns but at night they light up so nicely for quite a few hours!

I wish you had a picture. Is a little difficult to imagine the water bottle....

    Thank you for the thought

I like that idea. I think I'm gonna try that on my terrace.

That's very clever! I can picture exactly what you described. Never really thought of other uses for solar lights but now you got me thinking. Thanks!

we have white ceramic lanterns that are open designed on each side. They're really pretty at night. And by raising (thanks to plastic bottles) the solar panels level with tops of lanterns they glow for a long time
