How do you get rid of ants which are digging up your garden?

I have found little holes in the grass from which millions of ants emerge each day. Is there a safe, 'humane' way of ridding the garden of these pests?

If the ants are not harming anything or coming into your house why get rid of them. The leaves and insects the bring into their nest decay and fertilize the surrounding plants. Ants are also are predators and feed on insects that attack lawns and gardens, and in the process of gathering food, they often pollinate flowers and distribute seeds.

If they are close to any buildings, you can bet that they are getting into the wood structure of your house/building. Put down a mixture of 1/3 salt 2/3 sugar near their trails, they will carry it back to their nests & consume it. Yes, they will die, but would you rather have them destroying your buildings?
