You did not state what animals you think they are.
There are several products sold ( Critter Ridder) that you can spray on plants. Just be careful that they are non toxic in case a pet gets close. Also, whirrly gigs and shiny things will frighten animals plus look good in gardens.
Use ground up irish spring soap and spread it around your plants. You can also spray a mixture of soap and water on the leaves and the critters wont like it. Another thing is save your jalopena seeds and soak them in water and mix with cayenne pepper and spray on them. Also for squirrels, spread human hair in your beds. Most salons will give their hair to you. Just ask your hairdresser.
i find chemicals, scents, and the such, animals usually get used to them and they no longer work. Physical barriers are my favorite, bet depending on the size of your area, might not be possible. for my veggie garen, i have a wire fence all around, and at the bottom 18" an additional layer of 1/2" chicken wire fence to keep the bunnies out.
ground hogs can be pesky, i won't discuss them.
chipmunks are a special problem for new bulbs. i've resorted to making cages from chicken wire fence to plant areas of new bulbs.
can be a pain if you want to take them out in the fall, but it beats feeding the chipmunks.
good luck, sometimes, it's all about luck
