You most likely should expect to find something like this:

Depending on the age of the house, you will find some kind of wood or fiber sheathing. If a newer home you may find a house wrap covering the sheathing. Older homes were covered with felt tar paper.

if older home you may find multiple drilled holes for blown in insulation, that's why it's vinyl sided.

I had a home that was stucco and it was in bad shape so we opted to have it vinyl covered. I would assume either the homes old exterior or felt. Depending on who installed it and how thorough they were! Good luck!

You can find old siding like stucco or it can be a wateproof plastic and in the back of it it's wood. If it's waterproof plastic in the back of your vinyl maybe there will be horizontal pieces this is for keeping air circulation.

It all depends of where you live and how old your home is. It can be just about anything underneath the siding. Take a look at the back of your home where it won't show. And it also depends on what you are thinking of replacing it with. Can a new covering be placed right over the vinyl? If you live in a cold climate, I would suggest you make all your plans for the warm weather.
