Many home improvement stores sell a citrus base paint stripper and it might be cleaner to liberally apply that and then cover with saran wrap while it works, then remove the saran wrap with the stripper and then the sand and glaze. You might not get it all the first time, but you could then reapply and once that is done, sand the area, starting with a heavier grit and ultimately finishing with a lighter grit sandpaper.
