I'm painting with chalk paint for the first time, can I add water?

It seems like the chalk paint is way to thick, can you add some water without hurting the end result? And then when you wax what is the best way to apply it?
Thanks Marie

  • You can water down chalk paint with no adverse affect on the finished project. Just don't want to make it too runny. And try to have all the brush strokes going the same direction. The wax should be applied with a lint free cloth or brush and rubbed in like hand lotion. You might have to buff off any extra. Hope that helps.

    Hey Marie,

We think adding a little water can't hurt but we have used chalk paint plenty of times without watering it down! It's a great paint that's fun for us to make sign with! Cheers to crafting!

    Yes, you can!

You can mix it with a good latex paint, too. Just mix small amounts until you get what you want. I save cleaned out pill bottles and find mixing colors and paint works well in small amounts that these hold. I've also used larger containers for larger projects. Try not to mix more than you are going to use.

Yes, you can thin the paint with water. But, you don't want to make it so diluted that you don't get the proper coverage.

Yes, you can dilute with water but only do a tablespoon at a time. You don't want it to be too runny or you will not get good coverage. You can use a chip brush to wax or lint free cloth and then buff with clean cloth. (I use old tshirts)
